It used to be that couples looking for a quick way to get married would simply go the courthouse and get a plain vanilla wedding. But in today’s world, couples are more sophisticated and creative, and are discovering they can elope but want to have a ceremony that is special, intimate, romantic, and memorable.
Finding vendors who offer all-inclusive packages that are unique and romantic is getting much easier. Many offer private, upscale yet affordable venues that specialize in elopements for the discerning couple. You should never feel pressured to spend too much money on your wedding, or do anything that you don’t feel comfortable with. Your wedding is about celebrating you and your partner, and however you want to do that is perfect. Just because you are eloping doesn’t mean you have to skip the dress & tux. Fancy dress or casual, it’s all OK. The best part of eloping is that everything you need is already there—the two of you, a wedding officiant and a memorable romantic setting create a great experience.
Here are some tips for having an at sea wedding:
Planning a ship board wedding is no more complicated than a shore side service, but there are several special considerations to keep in mind when planning your special day.
Tip #1 – Find a charter boat that specializes in weddings so all the little details are taken care of.
Tip #2 – Ask them what happens if the event of bad weather. Some boats hardly rock at all in windy choppy waters; knowing what your options are will make for a beautiful experience no matter how hard it blows or rains.
Tip #3 – Make sure the operator can accommodate the number of guests you want. A big boat that can take up to 250 guests is unlikely to offer a small, intimate setting for an elopement with just you two.
Tip #4 – Great questions to ask while you are shopping for your boat:
Does the price include state taxes, the officiant’s fee, customized vows, decorations?
What does the officiant wear?
How do you get your marriage license?
What gratuities are in addition to the basic price?
Ask the operator for recommended florists, photographers, bakers, DJs, and hair & makeup artists. Ship board wedding operators know the best local sources for other wedding vendors. If they don’t then steer clear and find someone who is experienced.
Tip #5 – Think outdoors. Wind and updos can be a challenge. But just because you are on a boat doesn’t mean your wedding can’t be as fancy as you’d like. A good hair stylist can create a look that is gorgeous and yet still blown friendly. Veils dancing in the wind make fabulous photo opportunities. Spiky high heels on a boat? Not on most yachts, but your feet will thank you for the boat appropriate foot gear.
